Roof Stains: Meaning Behind Colors & Prevention

A stained roof can harm the curb appeal of your property. Roof discolorations may also indicate severe damage.

Learn what causes roof stains and how to prevent them from Shelter Construction, your trusted custom metal roofing contractor.

Green or Black Algae Stains

Gloeocapsa magma is a species of algae that commonly grows on roofing shingles. It can look from blue-green to dark black streaks or slime patches. Usually, it doesn’t cause harm to the roof, at least not the way mold can.

These stains can be removed with oxygen bleach or a solution of trisodium phosphate applied by a low-pressure wash. Leave the job to roof contractors for your safety and to prevent accidental roof damage.

Red & Brown Stains

Stains from rust around the chimney are quite common. It can be cleaned, treated and prevented with oxalic acid.

White Stains

Salt stains or efflorescence are caused by rainwater. It’s commonly found on slate roofs and at times on asphalt shingles.

Stain Patches

Dried leaves, seeds, fruits and other debris from nearby trees can land on your roof. Most usually grows in the shade of trees.

Water Stains

Check your attic and the ceiling below it for discoloration that appears damp. It can be a sign that your roof is leaking.

Light Spots on Shingles

Dark-colored asphalt shingles may look lighter and patchy as they get older. Inspect the gutters for granule buildup. Excessive granules in the gutters may be a sign you need to replace your old roof.
