Are Metal Panels Suitable as Low-Slope Roofing Material?
Metal panels are great at steep slope roofing a lot of homeowners prefer to install metal roofs because of their advantages. They’re durable, energy-efficient and can last for a long time, but can they be used in a low-sloped roof as well? The short answer is yes, but you’ll need to install standing seam metal roofing.
Shelter Construction Services, one of the state’s top roof contractors, elaborates further below.
The Challenges of Installing a Flat Roof
First off, the term flat roof is a bit of a misnomer. Flat roofs are slightly elevated to allow water to trickle down to the drains. However, at times, particularly in a heavy downpour, water tends to accumulate. Ponding water, in turn, can easily enter gaps and infiltrate your roof. Not to mention flat roofs are more exposed to UV rays, which can quickly break down their surface.
How a Standing Seam Metal Roof Can Help
The point where two metal panels meet is usually where these gaps are located and are therefore the most vulnerable part of a roof. These seams are raised in standing seam metal roofing, preventing water from entering them. And since metal reflects heat instead of absorbing it, it has a longer lifespan (about 40 to 70 years with proper maintenance) than a conventional flat roof.
Explore Your Other Options
It would be a good idea to explore your other roofing options before deciding on a type of roof. Your options would include bituminous and flexible membrane roofing. Bitumen roofing is durable and waterproof, but since it usually comes in dark colors, it tends to absorb more heat. Flexible membrane roofing, on the other hand, is attached to a building using mechanical fasteners. Metal Panels can be a good option.
If you’re having a hard time deciding on a type of roof, we recommend consulting a qualified roofer. Whether you need custom metal roofing installed or roof repair work done, only hire qualified contractors.
